A week ago, on May 07 a temporary ban on import of pig farming products from Latvia has been introduced in the Russian Federation.
The situation has not changed for the past week. Rosselkhoznadzor still thinks that epizootic situation in Latvia has worsen due to the outbreak of classical swine fever. According to deputy head of Federal service for agricultural products surveillance A Alekseenko across all European Union an unfavorable situation for pig farming is observed and the ban can be lifted only after it stabilizes.
Veto is put on import of livestock pigs including pedigree animals. The ban also covers boar semen, raw pork, wild boar meat, some types of food for dogs and cats, equipment used for raising, slaughtering and cutting pigs.
According to statistical data, provided by the RF customs service Latvia exported annually around 4 000 tons of pork (live weight). Import volume in money is worth 8 million dollars.
As we reported, Rosselkhoznadzor already banned pork delivery from the European Union. On April 07, import of all finished pork meat products was limited from Lithuania and Poland. The reason is the threat of African swine fever. European Union filed a claim against Russian sanctions to WTO and it became known that Rosselkhoznadzor is preparing a counter claim about inactivity of the EC in fighting against African fever.
